Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are easy to prepare and taste great. They are healthy and perfect for using leftovers in the kitchen. You do something good for yourself and can reduce food waste at the same time. Ideally, you should use a good blender that can handle harder fruits. Personally, after a few tries, I ended up with the Philips brand. Their blenders are world class. Of course, there are also other manufacturers, such as Nutribullet, that offer machines specifically for smoothies and are a bit cheaper. Read the reviews before buying one and make sure that the blender is capable of chopping the fruit as finely as possible. The finer, the better the smoothies taste afterwards.

You can put the ingredients for your green smoothie directly into the blender, roughly chopped. The concept is very very simple:

  • Fill 50% of the blender with as many different fruits and berries as possible. At least 2 varieties. Less is easier, more is more valuable. Start small and then work your way up.
  • Fill 50% of the blender with one to two portions of leafy greens.
  • Add one or two small portions of nuts, seeds or herbs on top as a booster. It's best to crush or at least chop the nuts beforehand.
  • Top it up with water and, depending on personal taste, also coconut water, coconut milk or some fruit juice.

If the ingredients have not been stored in the fridge, add a few ice cubes. Mix well and drink.

My basic recipe consists of a banana, an apple, coconut milk and ground almonds. I usually use spinach as the green ingredient. Then I add whatever I have on hand. That's usually fruits, but it could also be cucumbers, tomatoes, avocados or even ginger. Everything fresh and organic, of course. If I feel like detoxing, I add chlorella and some zeolite. How you put the mixture together is completely up to you. You can't do much wrong. It can only happen that you mix something that you don't really like. This is perfectly normal and happens to everyone at the beginning. With a little practice, you will soon find out what goes well together and what doesn't, and how to rescue an unbalanced mixture if necessary.

One of my favourite blends, for example, is the following: banana, apple, kiwi, grapes, mango, papaya, blueberries, spinach, almonds, chlorella, coconut milk and pineapple juice. The whole thing should be neither too sweet nor too sour and the consistency should also be pleasantly creamy. Not too watery, not too thick. It all depends on the right ratio. Everyone likes it a little differently. That's why I can't give a definitive recommendation here. It's better to use a little less liquid first and then add more as needed. If your smoothie is too thin, you can add a banana or coconut milk.

Examples of ingredients can be found in the following table. Ready-made recipes for healthy smoothies can be found in abundance on the internet. The examples below should serve as inspiration. Develop your own blends. Experimenting is fun! ;)

Field Report

When I started with green smoothies, I honestly had no idea what the impact would be. I did it because I was tired of the daily food coma after lunch. Since I could increasingly work at home, it seemed like the perfect alternative. When you are used to lunch, you automatically get hungry at the usual time, even if you do not actually need anything. Breakfast was never an issue for me. I didn't really need it for office work and school. So I started making a jug of fruit smoothie around eleven o'clock and drank it over the next two to three hours. While searching for recipes, I stumbled across the concept of green smoothies. It seemed interesting to me and so I tried it out.

The first thing to say is that the smoothies have completely eliminated my problem with the food coma after lunch. I also quickly noticed that I am generally more alert and I am no longer hungry at all until the evening. That was very interesting. I then researched more about it and tried different ingredients. In the beginning it was a bit difficult to find the right mixture. But over time, different combinations have emerged that I like very much and that surprisingly always work. As I mixed more and more ingredients together, I tended to prepared way too much. Of course, it's best to drink the smoothie as fresh as possible, but throwing away the excess was not an option. So I bought two glass bottles and put the rest in the fridge for the next day. If you drink too much at once, it can result in mild diarrhoea. Our digestive system is not made to process only pureed food. We have to eat something solid from time to time.

Over time, my desire for sweets disappeared and I no longer have a craving for snacks in between my meals. I have now completely banned sugar from my kitchen. The fruits give me so much energy that I only eat a full meal in the classic sense once a day, if at all. In the beginning I was clearly overweight. In the meantime I have lost over 30 kg and I feel great. This is definitely also due to the reduced sugar consumption. This step alone has brought about an extreme change. Every time I visit my friends these days, they tell me I look younger. And it's true! You can see it perfectly when we compare old photos with the current ones. Shifting the focus of your diet to fruits and fresh, uncooked vegetables has a rejuvenating effect. Skin and hair become smoother and shinier. The brain functions much better. You have much more energy. Wounds heal faster and you are also less often sick. The flu only lasts one day for me today. I lie down, have a fever for a few hours and then I'm up again. I haven't taken any medications for years.

Whether green smoothies are the right path to better health and rejuvenation for you is, of course, up to you. However, I can only recommend incorporating more raw food into your daily diet, however it is prepared. The effects are definitely impressive. I wrote in the article on cancer that you should eat the rainbow. Green smoothies are perfect for this. When my father was in hospital, I used to bring him fresh smoothies every day. He loved it. :)
