Diarrhoea

This information is intended for adults. If you're concerned about a child, please contact a doctor.

Diarrhoea is an elimination process that should not be interrupted if possible. The body is trying to get rid of something. In most cases, there is no point in suppressing it with medication. Stay at home and let it out. You also don't keep the kitchen waste in your home. You take it out. After a few hours, the process is usually finished. Maybe it takes a whole day. It is unpleasant but necessary. The body does not do this for fun. There is something harmful in the intestine and it has to go. Trust your body. It knows very well what it is doing. If the condition persists, if there is bleeding or fever, have it checked. Then you can still intervene if necessary.

Since a lot of water and electrolytes are lost during diarrhoea, we should replenish this. There exist very simple remedies you can use:

  • Coconut water: Pure coconut water is a wonderful electrolyte supplier.
  • Salt water: Add some Himalayan or sea salt to a warm glass of water. Stir well until the salt has dissolved and then drink it. Do not add too much salt to the water because it will become undrinkable. If you like, you can mask the taste of salt with a little lemon juice and honey. Do not add too much of this either. It could cause nausea. If necessary, you can dilute the mixture with water and stir well again.
  • Cucumber water: Cut a cucumber into thin slices and put it into a jug of water. Leave to infuse for one to two hours and then drink it. Not as effective as the other options, but tastier and refreshing. For a better effect, you can also add a little salt and lemon juice.
  • Ginger tea: Cut a few thin slices of ginger and put them in hot water. Let the tea steep for ten minutes and then drink it. If this is too spicy for you, you can also put the ginger in lukewarm water and let it steep for a few hours. Then add more water as needed until the taste suits you.

If possible, do not eat anything until the body has completed the elimination process. Drink plenty of water. This helps. Otherwise let the digestion rest. The more you trust your body and let it do its thing, the quicker it will be over.
